The 2026 Mazda CX-5, the third-generation iteration of the popular SUV, has made its official Malaysian preview at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS), signaling a significant strategic move by Bermaz Motor. This highly anticipated model, globally unveiled last June, is now open for booking from June 12, 2026, with an estimated starting price of RM170,000.
Bermaz Motor, the official distributor, has confirmed that the new CX-5 will initially arrive as a fully-imported (CBU) model, with local assembly (CKD) slated to commence approximately 12-16 months later. This phased introduction strategy is designed to meet immediate market demand while preparing for future localized production. A distinctive aspect of this launch is Bermaz Auto executive chairman Tan Sri Ben Yeoh’s announcement that both the second- and third-generation CX-5 models will be sold concurrently. This dual-model approach will see the outgoing second-generation CX-5, currently a CKD model, streamlining its offerings to a 2.0-liter engine, while the new 2026 Mazda CX-5 will exclusively feature a 2.5-liter engine, specifically the e-Skyactiv G mild-hybrid powertrain.
Strategic Market Positioning and Powertrain Evolution
The decision to sell two generations simultaneously reflects a nuanced understanding of the Malaysian market, allowing Bermaz Motor to cater to different price points and customer preferences. The new 2.5-liter e-Skyactiv G engine is a naturally-aspirated petrol inline-four unit, paired with a 24-volt mild-hybrid system. This powertrain delivers 141 PS and 238 Nm of torque, driving the front wheels via a six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission. The preview model at KLIMS also featured all-wheel drive, though Bermaz Motor has stated that final specifications may vary upon launch. Enhancements extend beyond the powertrain, with the new CX-5 incorporating a brake-by-wire system and refined chassis and suspension settings aimed at improving both handling dynamics and ride comfort.
The physical evolution of the CX-5 is immediately apparent. While maintaining a resemblance to its predecessor, the 2026 Mazda CX-5 is a notably larger vehicle. It measures 4,690 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,695 mm in height, representing an increase of 115 mm in length, 15 mm in width, and 15 mm in height over the second-generation model. Crucially, its wheelbase has been stretched by a considerable 115 mm to 2,815 mm, promising enhanced cabin space and stability. The exterior styling, adhering to Mazda’s Kodo design philosophy, introduces a ‘Wearable Gear’ concept, characterized by a black frame beneath a prominent seven-point grille that seamlessly connects to slim headlamps with stacked daytime running lights. Other distinctive design elements include gently squared-off wheel arches, a less sloped roofline, and L-shaped taillights reminiscent of the CX-60 and CX-80. Notably, the rear eschews a traditional Mazda badge in favor of brand script on the tailgate, complemented by visible tailpipes.
“The introduction of the 2026 Mazda CX-5 with a dual-generation sales strategy highlights a sophisticated approach to market segmentation, catering to both existing loyalists and new buyers seeking advanced features and a larger footprint.”
Technological Leap and Interior Redesign
Inside, the 2026 Mazda CX-5 embraces a minimalist aesthetic, integrating most vehicle functions into a large central infotainment touchscreen. This shift, according to Mazda, is a direct response to customer preference. Buyers will have a choice between a 12.9-inch or a substantial 15.6-inch central display, with the preview car featuring the latter alongside a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The iconic commander knob, a staple of previous Mazda interiors, has been retired, making way for a wireless charging pad. The new infotainment system is built on Android Automotive OS, offering seamless integration with Google services, a feature increasingly common in modern vehicles.
For context, the current second-generation CX-5 in Malaysia is offered in three variants: the 2.0G 2WD Mid (RM135,469.20), the 2.0G 2WD High (RM147,469.20), and the 2.5G 2WD High (RM164,960.40), with premium colors incurring an additional RM3,300. The estimated RM170,000 starting price for the new 2026 Mazda CX-5 positions it at a slight premium, reflecting its larger size, updated powertrain, and advanced technological features. Bermaz Motor anticipates a full launch in the third quarter of 2026, spanning from July to September.
The dual offering of the 2026 Mazda CX-5 and its predecessor, coupled with a strategic shift towards CBU before CKD, underscores Mazda’s commitment to maintaining its strong presence in the competitive Malaysian SUV market. This measured approach allows for flexibility in inventory management and pricing, while gradually transitioning customers to the latest technological advancements and design language. As the automotive industry continues its rapid evolution towards electrification and advanced connectivity, Mazda’s strategy with the new CX-5 demonstrates a pragmatic yet forward-looking vision for its core SUV offering.
