Metanet Software unveils N Plus Infinity Times Two, a highly anticipated multiplayer sequel to the critically acclaimed 2D platformer, N++. After more than a decade since the release of N++, the two-person studio, Metanet Software, announced their return to the beloved N concept, this time with a strong emphasis on competitive and cooperative multiplayer gameplay. This surprising reveal at Summer Game Fest Live 2026 has ignited excitement among long-time fans and new players alike, promising a fresh take on the brutally challenging yet immensely satisfying platforming action.
A Decade-Long Journey to a New Vision
The journey to N Plus Infinity Times Two has been an unconventional one for Metanet Software. Cofounders Raigan Burns and Mare Sheppard, known for their meticulous development process, spent the intervening 11 years exploring new ideas and even releasing a 10-year anniversary update for N++. Their dedication to finding a truly compelling game concept meant resisting the urge to scale up their studio, a philosophy that stands in stark contrast to the often-unsustainable practices seen across the broader games industry. Burns aptly describes their approach:
“We like being in a band. That’s fun. Being in a lot of meetings and doing a lot of managing: not fun.”
This commitment to their creative process allowed them the freedom to iterate and prototype until the ‘magic’ of a new idea emerged.
N Plus Infinity Times Two: The Ultimate Couch Party Game
Unlike its predecessor, N++, which was designed as the definitive single-player experience, N Plus Infinity Times Two is positioned as “the ultimate virtual couch party game with a low skill floor and no skill ceiling.” This shift reflects the developers’ observations of how modern players engage with games, even solo, often through constant communication with friends. The new title aims to blend the nostalgic charm of couch co-op with contemporary multiplayer dynamics, offering a variety of competitive and cooperative modes. Players can expect the same fluid, acrobatic platforming and distinctive graphic design-inspired visuals that defined the N series, but now reimagined for shared experiences. The game is slated for a 2027 launch across PS5, Xbox, related Tech news, Switch 2, and PC, promising broad accessibility for its multiplayer focus.
The Philosophy of Distinctive Creation
In an increasingly homogenized creative landscape, Metanet Software champions the importance of doing distinct work. Burns believes that revisiting a previous idea, like through the multiple iterations of N, can be a powerful way to innovate, akin to successful indie sequels like Hades II and Silksong. These titles demonstrate that a fresh angle can make a follow-up more than just a by-the-numbers release.
“Being yourself is more fun and exciting anyways,”
Burns explains. “But I honestly think it’s more commercially viable to do something only you can do, because then you have no competition.” This ethos underpins the creation of N Plus Infinity Times Two, ensuring it stands out in a crowded market.
Looking Beyond the Infinity
While the focus is currently on the upcoming launch, the Metanet Software duo isn’t ruling out future returns to the N universe. They acknowledge that the grueling development of N++ made them hesitant about future projects, but the current game has rekindled their enjoyment. “This one really feels like we’re having fun,” says Burns. Sheppard adds, “I think we no longer think this is definitively going to be the last one. We’ve abandoned that idea. It doesn’t have to be.” This openness suggests that the legacy of N, and the innovative spirit of Metanet Software unveils N Plus Infinity Times Two, may continue to evolve for many years to come.
